blink.

10/11/2018

Picture
World-class contemporary circus company invites audiences to return to their roots through a lively performance of acrobatic storytelling, spoken word and music.
Performed by Momentum Aerial & Acrobatic Troupe, “blink.” is a series of seven stories that reminds us climate change is a personal issue - the earth is our home, and our home is in danger. As the time to act is now, you can come be inspired by this lively performance Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14.

“blink.” was born of a question: what is home? Montreal-based writer and circus artist Maia Thomlinson, 19, began to ask herself this question as she learned of the severity of the environmental crisis we are facing today. “The more I became aware of the severity of the issue,” said Maia, “the more I wanted to get people to wake up! We’ve become so disconnected from the natural world, but this is our home we’re talking about! We’re already seeing people being affected on a massive scale, and I think sometimes we forget, that could just as well be us.”

Maia shared her vision with artistic director, Monica Goermann, and together with a dynamic team of artists, they created this show. “Art, in my opinion, is the best way to break down barriers to massive issues and get people to care.”

The team, Momentum, is composed of skilled acrobats who tell stories through movement, circus and dance. The show will include performances in cyr wheel, trapeze, hand balancing and more. Maia has moved away to pursue her circus career, but she will be returning home to Winnipeg to work with the team for this event.

Following the show on Sunday, there will be a bonfire for the community to share their own stories and speak about the issue together. Intrigued? Find your tickets on Eventbrite today.
Performance details:
Saturday, October 13 @ 7PM
Sunday, October 14 @ 3PM
Monica’s Danz Gym
Tickets are $15-25 on Eventbrite

The DJD Dance Centre Creative Residency Program is a program that aims to encourage the independent dance artist sector in Calgary and nationwide. The residency program has been created to support the research, development, and/or final phase of production for independent choreographers working on specified, self-directed projects that are targeted for production. During the residency, artists will have access to one studio at the DJD Dance Centre free of charge for the duration of their residency. This arrangement is designed to allow choreographers to work and grow in a concentrated manner and with as few limits as possible to the choreographer’s creative energies.

The program period begins in January and applications are open now until October 8th. Please visit http://www.decidedlyjazz.com/djd-dance-centre/creative-residency-program/ for the application form.
