Despite the richness of the Inuit artistic heritage, Nunavut is the only territory/province in Canada without a performing arts space. Preserving the Inuit tradition and encouraging a new generation to explore and celebrate their heritage is key to strengthening a culture and language at risk.
I learned about Qaggiq project in December. Qaggiavuut, a non-profit society dedicated to strengthening Nunavut performing arts, is leading the Qaggiq project in collaboration with territorial and federal governments, Inuit organizations and cultural leaders throughout Nunavut and Canada. Leaders in Canadian arts and culture have also formed the Friends of Qaggiavuut advisory committee to lend their expertise.
Send a letter to your federal and territorial representatives today, calling on them to support the development of Qaggiq, Nunavut’s first Performance & Cultural Learning Hub so that Nunavut’s culture and heritage can be both preserved and empowered to grow.
